Başlangıçta Tarih içinde yer alan bu tür, zamanla bağımsız bir bilim dalı hâlinde gelişip serpildi. Tarih, günümüzden önce yaşayanların yüz yüze geldikleri olayları ve onların kahramanlarını anlatır. Olaylar kadar, o olaylarda etkili olmuş kişi ya da kişilerin hayat hikâyeleri, bizzat hadisenin kendisi kadar önemlidir. Olayları meydana getirenler insanlar olduğuna göre, onların hayat hikayelerini tespit etmek de biyografinin konusudur. Bu yüzden doğulu ve batılı tarihçilerin büyük çoğunluğu, tarih içinde biyografiye büyük önem vermişlerdir
