Annotation
The museum as intitution, and indeed as a "category of the spirit", is innate to the European man. We may safely say that the idea of the museum is a distinctive and fundamental characteristic of modern Western civilization. This European part of the world, which invented the myths of Ulysses and Faust, is also the place that gave shape to the museum. The museum is a testimonial ti what we once were, it certifies our identity, and it safeguards in a sort of sacralized immortality the collective memory of what we know. With the museum, Western man has attempted to exorcize meaninglessness and death. At its origins in the Italy of the Middle Ages and the early renaissance, and later in the Europe of absolutism and the Counter Reformation.

Annotation
In Greek culture the name referred to tempels dedicated to the Muses, divinities who protected the arts, poetry, music and writing, where the gifts and votive offerings of the faithful were collected and displayed. Clasical sources recall that a pinakotheca wa set up in the building next to the Proylaeum of the Acropolis of Athens to exhibit works by important Greek painters, but the first real museum was the Museion of Alexander the Great, in the Third century B.C. The network of museums in Italy is the result of the Napoleonic laws that closed convents, and the outline given to Italian art history by Vasari and codified in the Eighteenth century by the Abbot Luigi lanzi. This book ends with two fundamental national museums that document the development of painting in Italy from the Thirteenth century ti the beginning of the nineteenth: the brera Gallery and the Accademy Galleries in Venice.
