Annotation
By analyzing Mexico's experience with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), "Lessons from NAFTA" aims to provide guidance to Latin American and Caribbean countries considering free trade agreements with the United States. The authors conclude that the agreement has increased foreign trade and investment, but has had a limited impact on Mexico's average per capita income. Additionally, the agreement has contributed to a slight reduction in poverty and improvements in job quality. The study offers insights into the structure of such agreements. In particular, this illustrates the shortcomings of certain aspects of the NAFTA agreement, particularly those related to rules of origin, which severely limit the ability of Mexican firms in many sectors to benefit from NAFTA preferences
