The Jeju Local Government has been trying to attract domestic and international attention to designate Jeju Island as World Peace Island. In this situation the top priority is to let people all over the world easily understand the people, culture and above all, recognize the tragic history of Jeju Island. The significant aspects of Jeju are well permeated into the works of Hyeon ki-young. In particular, 'Aunt Suni' dealt with the most tragic chapters of Jeju history and culture. That's the very reason I chose to translate his most famous novel 'Aunt Suni' into English. My personal humble belief is that people should come first before every other ideology. No more bloody tragedies should be repeated on this beautiful planet. - Translated by Song Jong Do

The book "A Thousand Hands of Compassion" unites all the main aspects of Korean Buddhist thought. Master Seon Dehan Avalokiteshvar leads to the idea that the Bodhisattva of Compassion does not exist separately from our inner nature of the Buddha, and the thousands of hands of Avalokiteshvara are a manifestation of the enlightened compassion inherent in all of us

Annotation
Third person predominates matching the usually reserved, indicative and close observation of the Korean cityscape and its miniaturized spots of nature, and also observations of Koreans and their society. The pilgrimage aspect is mainly reflections on Korean experiences and their results on the writer; it is not a quest for an absolute or higher end. Poetic structure varies e.g. being based on syllable count, repeated sound (assonance/alliteration) or image. Extensive footnotes offer assistance to non-native English language readers, in vocabulary, related poems and culture points. The intended audience is university-aged and older Koreans as well as overseas readers interested in that dynamic and often surprising nation.
