The book tells the story of the fall of the western stronghold of the Austrian Empire-Königgretz, which was attacked and defeated by the Prussian army on July 3, 1866. The battle for the city of Koniggratz was the largest at the time, it was attended by nearly half a million soldiers. It was also the first battle whose outcome was directly determined by the availability of new technologies, including the railway, telegraph, cast steel rifled cannon, and breech rifle. It was also a lesson in the fallacy of relying on technology at the expense of a sound strategy
