This publication contains speeches delivered by participants of the International Conference held in Astana on 19 November 2010. The conference was organized by the National Commission for Women Affairs and Family - Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the UN Development Programme in Kazakhstan and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The goal of the conference was to inform the general public and representatives of the diplomatic corps of the member countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference on gender policies pursued by Kazakhstan, and to discuss the agenda of the forthcoming chairmanship of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Organization of the Islamic Conference

The Islamic civilization epitomizes both the treasure and the shelter. It is the treasure, given its copious contribution, over ages, in the promotion of science, literature, crafts, and arts, but it is also the shelter and the safe haven securing protection of the Nation s identity and values, and ensuring proper impetus for renovation and creativity, safeguarding, all the while, the Islamic entity and preserving it against all forms of alienation and deviation.
