Входит в перечень рецензируемых научных изданий, в которых должны быть опубликованы основные научные результаты диссертаций на соискание ученой степени кандидата или доктора наук; индексируется в РИНЦ, RSCI. Впервые издавался в 1919 г. (вышел один номер). В 1930-е - начале 1950-х гг. Институт истории АН СССР издавал непериодические сборники под тем же названием. С 1955 по 1962 гг. выходил журнал "Исторический архив". В 1992 г. издание возобновлено.
